"Speaking truth to power" = heckling
The best part is the self-serving statement from the hecklers:
We celebrate free speech: for that reason we allowed the Minutemen to speak, and for that same reason we peacefully occupied the stage and spoke ourselves. Our peaceful protest was violently attacked by members of the College Republicans and their supporters, who are the very same people who invited the Minutemen to our campus in the first place. The Minutemen are not a legitimate voice in the debate on immigration. They are a racist, armed militia who have declared open hunting season on immigrants, causing countless hate crimes and over 3000 deaths on the border. Why should exploitative corporations have free passes between nations, but individual people not? No human being is illegal.Huh? Slowly now, line by line:
We celebrate free speech: for that reason we allowed the Minutemen to speak, and for that same reason we peacefully occupied the stage and spoke ourselves. No, you rushed the stage, interruped the speaker and took over. That's not allwoing them to speak.
Our peaceful protest was violently attacked by members of the College Republicans and their supporters,As opposed to your own act of violence, which you fail to see as such.
The Minutemen are not a legitimate voice in the debate on immigration."I disagree; therefore they have no right to speak."
They are a racist, armed militia who have declared open hunting season on immigrants, causing countless hate crimes and over 3000 deaths on the border.Sources, please? It's easy to say someone has caused "countless" hate crimes when you don't have to count them. Don't forget to provide your sources tying them to over 3000 deaths.
Why should exploitative corporations have free passes between nations, but individual people not? That's a red herring. You were discussing your behavior before you changed the subject.
No human being is illegal.Human beings are not illegal, but sometimes their actions are. Congratulations. You hit all the talking points and slogans. You shut down speech that you found objectionable. G-d help us all if you come into power. Now go read The Gulag Archipelago.

Confirmed: I am humor-challenged
I must be humor-challenged. "Just Don't Take the Pooch" seems very light-hearted for a crime headline. I'm sure the mugging victim is laughing it up after four thugs took his stuff. Maybe Melissa Bailey, Paul Bass, and the Independent readers think a "spontaneous redistribution of wealth" is an acceptable form of urban tzedakah, but there are still some people who think of it as crime.I have it on good authority -- well, as much authority as an Independent reader can carry -- that I am indeed humor-challenged. There must be some government grant money available to rehabilitate me, or at least buy me a copy of Zinn's History.
Yes, you are humor-challenged.The crime may only have been non-violent because the victim was outnumbered 4-1 and he gave up his stuff without a fight. I have a scar on my face because I did fight for my property the last time a group of yutes tried to rob me. It's good for a laugh every time I look in the mirror.
I take my dog to the Edgewood run frequently, and could easily have been in that victim's place. Even so, I don't object to a little humor in the Independent's reporting of non-violent crime.
Things in our fair city are a little tense. Curmudgeony is not the answer.

This is the "peace and justice" movement
They always talk about democracy, but the standard operating procedure is "free speech for me, but not for thee." Try disputing the "peace and justice" activists on WPKN and see how far you get.

Tisha b'Av

The ninth day in the Jewish month of Av.
It is a day of many calamities in Jewish history (from OU.org):
1. The sin of the spies caused Hashem to decree that the Children of Israel who left Egypt would not be permitted to enter the land of Israel;
2. The first Temple was destroyed;
3. The second Temple was destroyed;
4. Betar, the last fortress to hold out against the Romans during the Bar Kochba revolt in the year 135, fell, sealing the fate of the Jewish people.
5. One year after the fall of Betar, the Temple area was plowed.
6. In 1492, King Ferdinand of Spain issued the expulsion decree, setting Tisha B'Av as the final date by which not a single Jew would be allowed to walk on Spanish soil.
7. World War I – which began the downward slide to the Holocaust – began on Tisha B’av.
Is Jane kidding or what?
This picture appeared in a Jane Hamsher blog entry in the Huffington Post, but the properties show that it's hosted at the poodle dog puddle. It looks like the photo was deleted from the HuffPo, but it came from here: http://www.firedoglake.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/4931cdbe-934f-4622-97c7-9629e6b7f8a3.jpg
Hey Lamont, you big dummy! Is this the kind of support you want?
UPDATE: Timing is everything. This image was published the day Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were in Bridgeport to announce their endorsement of Ned Lamont.

The Debate
I'm not sold on either of these guys. Senator Lieberman has been in office 18 years. That's long enough to become out of touch with his constituents. Lamont has the backing of Kos--the kiss of death in almost every campaign.
LOL! Lieberman is a Reagan democrat. He just said, "There you go again."
UPDATE: The moderator finally stopped Lieberman from interrupting his opponent.
Lieberman seems to orbit around two talking points: I bring home the pork, and Lamont is running a one-issue campaign.

Invasion of the carpetbagging bloggers
For now Hamsher has an extended-stay motel room in Meriden. She's hoping to rent a farmhouse in Guilford through the primary; a bunch of her West Coast buddies want to stay with her and the poodles to witness and blog history themselves.Just what we need. She's a dangerous driver too.
Somewhere around Meriden I realized Hamsher was breaking two Connecticut laws at once: the dashboard needle tugged at the 90 mark, and she was dialing and talking on the celly while steering. She sounds like a candidate for a Darwin Award.

Oh Boy! Jane's Here!
Not all the firedogs are feeling so sentimental. One found an opportunity to attack somebody not related to the current thread.
I get the impression that Michelle Malkin is a product of her husbands ideology and not her own. She is intelligent but not smart enough to have her own say, a parrot of her husband and the conservative movement, she may not realize that she’s not a WASP or JAP or even blond but she does crave the attention. Mabuhay Maglalang bana mabaling or in Pink Flamingo’s that stands for pah pah ooh mow mow.I wonder what this poster is getting at? Hmmmmmmmm......

Stop the Presses! Jane's coming!
That firedoglake thing reads like a cult of personality. At least she drove some traffic to WPKN Today a few weeks ago. Right now she seems to be the poster child for Lieberman Derangement Syndrome. Somebody should clue Jane and the folks at Lamont Blog that Michelle Malkin did not actually endorse Joe Lieberman. If this is "reality-based" blogging, I am the walrus.

Notes on today's program
The new CD openers are here. They are round, translucent things that look like fat lollipops on a key chain; the design is similar to the wristwatch. If you are a retailer and you want some to give out to customers, drop me a line.
The new Monk/Coltrane release is as good as expected. I also made a happy discovery in the library: Remi Kabaka/Abbdul Lasisi Amao/Steve Winwood. It's wrapping up my electric set right now, and then we're in for a change in style.
Today's final set is bookended by two versions of Darrell Scott's "River Take Me." The first is a new recording by Sam Bush, who played on the original; the closer is a live version by Darrell himself.
UPDATE: I'll try to post audio from the unhinged phone call I took on air during my show.

Lamont's backers show their true colors
Isryale
Juan Cole is, apparently, not too bothered by the fact that he's not going to Yale and who could blame him? Presented with the choice of living and working in Ann Arbor or Hartford New Haven, I'd rather be a Wolverine too. But that's not what this is about. I have a problem with the fact that Yale decided not to hire someone because a bunch of Israel-first, rightwing flacks went and scared Yale's Jewish donors, and they in turn scared administrators at Yale. Now check out the cartoons. Is this guy living in 1938 or what?
Hey, Lamont, you big dummy! This is coming under the auspices of the guy in your TV commercials. Do you approve this message?
Your candidacy is through unless you dump Markos "screw them" Zuniga. How about it, Ned? Are you going to distance yourself from the sewer or roll in it?

Home-schoolers at risk in Belgium
Yesterday my husband Paul Belien, the editor of this website, was summoned to the police station and interrogated. He was told that the Belgian authorities are of the opinion that, as a homeschooler, he has not adequately educated his children and, hence, is neglecting his duty as a parent, which is a criminal offence. The Ministry of Education has asked the judiciary to press charges and the judiciary told the police to investigate and take down his statement.Their crime? Refusing to sign an official “declaration of homeschooling” in which they agree to school their children “respecting the respect [sic] for the fundamental human rights and the cultural values of the child itself and of others.”
The declaration does not specify what “respecting the respect for the fundamental human rights and the cultural values of the child itself and of others” means. It states, however, that government inspectors decide about this and adds – and here is the crux of the matter – that if the parents receive two negative reports from the inspectors they will have to send their child to an official government recognized school. That's Big Brother for you. The people who complain about fascism in this country should try living in progressive Europe.

The Revenge of Marxism
Read it all. What happened is that while the “hard” Marxism of the Soviet Union may have collapsed, at least for now, the “soft” Marxism of the Western Left has actually grown stronger, in part because we deemed it to be less threatening. The “hard” Marxists had intercontinental nuclear missiles and openly said that they would “bury” us. The soft Marxists talk about tolerance and may seem less threatening, but their goal of overthrowing the evil, capitalist West remains the same. In fact, they are more dangerous precisely because they hide their true goals under different labels. Perhaps we should call it “stealth Socialism” instead of soft Socialism.
One of the readers of Fjordman blog once pointed out that we never had a thorough de-Marxification process after the Cold War, similar to the de-Nazification after WW2. He was thinking of the former Soviet Union and the countries in Eastern Europe, but he should probably have included their Marxist fellow travellers, their sympathizers and apologists in the West. We never fully confronted the ideology of Marxism, and demonstrated that the suffering it caused for hundreds of millions of people was a direct result of Marxist ideas. We just assumed that Marxism was dead and moved on, allowing many of its ideals to mutate into new forms and many of its champions to continue their work uninterrupted, sometimes filled with a vengeance and a renewed zeal for another assault on the capitalist West.

Not Settled! Not Forget!
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face — for ever.
- George Orwell, 1984
FM
For serious Dan fans, here are two vintage videos of the original lineup. David Palmer rocks out on tambourine on "Reelin' in the Years" and sings lead on "Do It Again" (check out Skunk on the congas).
If you're wondering what ever happened to Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Pete Blackwell at (parenthetical remarks) reports that
It turns out that the former Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers ax man is a consultant to the U.S. government on missile defense and terrorist tactics.Apparently he's also reelin' in the dough, making more as a defense consultant than he ever did in show biz. He hasn't forgotten music, though. According to Wikipedia,
He also occasionally plays in The Coalition of the Willing, a band comprised of Andras Simonyi, Hungarian Ambassador to the United States; Alexander Vershbow, US Ambassador to South Korea; Daniel B. Poneman, formerly of the United States National Security Council and now of The Scowcroft Group; and Lincoln Bloomfield, former United States Assistant Secretary of State for Political Military Affairs.
