November 13th in Jam Band History

Archived audio
Performances by jam bands on this day in history.

  • Mr. Blotto; The Weight; 11/13/98 Chicago, IL
  • Umphrey's McGee; All In Time; 11/13/03 Knoxville, TN
  • Phish; Stash; 11/13/97 Las Vegas, NV

[1:00 station ID]

  • The Breakfast; Cut Me Some Slack; 11/13/09 Southbridge, MA
  • Grateful Dead; Dark Star; 11/13/72 Kansas City, KS
  • Grateful Dead; Morning Dew; 11/13/72 Kansas City, KS

[2:00 p.m.]

Trampled By Turtles is an up-and-coming string band worth checking out.

Mr. Blotto is known for freewheeling, fun shows, and their take on "The Weight" with a freestyle rap battle is no exception.

Umphrey's McGee's performance of "All In Time" contains teases of Moby Dick, Hurt Bird Bath, and Birdland following the drum solo.

Phish was in the middle of their Fall 1997 tour, a favorite of many a phan. This version of "Stash" features some ambient, meter-less playing in the middle of the long jam.

In 1972, the Grateful Dead was pairing "Dark Star" and "Morning Dew" regularly, but this version is relatively unknown, probably because there is no soundboard source for this show. The version we heard is from Owsley's audience recording. The Dark Star is very long: 13 minutes before the first verse, and 33 minutes in all. The jam before Morning Dew is reminiscent of the "59th Street Bridge" motif the boys employed in their 1970 excursions, but much, much faster.

Michela Musolino and Vincenzo Castellana perform "Sempri amMari - Traditional Sicilian Songs to the Sea"

When: Sunday, October 30, 1:00 PM
Where: WPKN "Studio 207," 244 University Avenue, Bridgeport, CT
On the air at 89.5 FM and online at wpkn.org

The rich musical tradition of Sicily includes many songs that speak of the sea, sing its praises or belong to those whose work connects them to the water.  Musicians Michela Musolino and Vincenzo Castellana join together to pay tribute to Sicily’s sea. Musolino, a vocalist known for her performances of Sicilian Roots Music, and Castellana, a noted percussionist of the Sicilian drumming tradition, have created a work of song, percussion and recitations which illustrate the intimate connection of Sicily, her history and her culture to the sea which surrounds it. They will be joined by special guests:  bassist Vito Galante and oud player Thom Chess.

Castellana has collaborated with Maestro Ennio Morricone, and Musolino has recently performed with Sicilian  singer/songwriter Pippo Pollina at his US debut.

The program will take place on the second floor of the University Of Bridgeport student center in Room 207. The public is invited to join us in our "living room" broadcast location across the hall from the WPKN studios for this hour long performance.

NPR Gets Radio Host Fired for Occupying

NOTE: The details are not really clear on this, but if I'm reading correctly, it sounds like NPR pressured an affiliate into dropping a host because of her extracurricular activities. I could be wrong. Read the linked articles.

By way of War Is a Crime:
National Public Radio on Wednesday discovered that a woman named Lisa Simeone who produced hosted a show about opera called "World of Opera" had been participating in a nonviolent occupation of Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., organized by October2011.org
NPR sent an email to its staff and made a blog post stating, "We're in conversations with WDAV about how they intend to handle this. We of course take this issue very seriously.." According to War Is a Crime,
About three and a half hours after the above email was sent, Simeone had been fired by a show called Soundprint as punishment for having been "unethical."
Simeone was an independent contractor who hosted the program, which was carried by some NPR stations. Apparently NPR doesn't want to upset it's sponsors corporate overlords advertisers underwriters.

UPDATE: The Associated Press has a more detailed story (by way of WTOP).

On Thursday, NPR spokeswoman Anna Christopher said the network's code of ethics applies to cultural programs it distributes, such as "World of Opera," as well as news shows that the network produces, acquires or distributes.
"We are not her employer, but she is a host for a show that we distribute," Christopher said. "She's a public person who represents NPR and public radio."
Though "Soundprint" airs on NPR stations, it's not distributed by the network itself.
NPR's ethics code states that "NPR journalists may not participate in marches and rallies" involving issues NPR covers. The code notes that some provisions may not apply to outside contributors. It uses a freelancer who primarily contributes arts coverage as an example.
Simeone said she is not an "NPR journalist." For the "Soundprint" show, her role involved writing introductions to the show's featured documentaries, and she was expected to give her point of view. In the past when she worked for NPR, she said she also wrote op-eds for The Baltimore Sun with no problem.

No. It was too dangerous to leave the house during Irene, but I did have some good stuff planned for you – some old stuff, some new stuff, and a crunchy episode of "Today in Jam Band History." I can tell you that after weathering some hairy thunderstorms in the Radio Vibes trailer, and driving to WPKN after a few nasty snowstorms, it was nice to be at home for this most recent weather adventure.

Here's hoping we are done with the severe natural phenomena so we can spend next Sunday together. I'll have an interview with Roy Jay (of the Roy Jay Band), and September 4th in Jam Band History. Don't forget, I owe you that "Big Railroad Blues" from 7/21/83 that I had to cut off at the end of the show last week.

The Sunday Brunch Concert schedule is resuming September 11th with a great lineup of shows. Check the details here. I hope you have an easy clean-up and that your dwelling is good shape.

The WPKN High-Rollers Ball

Apparently there was some kind of fancy reception for "major donors" to WPKN the other night. I'd tell you more, but like most of us who actually do the radio programs at WPKN, I wasn't invited. Apparently a few elite members of the volunteer staff and the paid general manager met with the well-heeled listeners, who were then given a tour of the run-down studio we used to call home.
