WBAI continues melting down
Pacifica's Interim Executive Director Grace Aaron replaced Tony Riddle, WBAI's General Manager, on May 4th by kicking him upstairs to a no-show position with Pacifica's national office. Pacifica's Interim Chief Financial Officer, LaVarn Williams, takes over. The NYC IMC published the leaked letter from Grace Aaron. The comments, as usual for Indymedia, speak for themselves.
* You will be reassigned from your current position as station manager of WBAI to the national office as
Development Director.
* Your salary and benefits will remain the same.
* You will work out of your home until further notice, and will report to me as your immediate supervisor.
That's not a bad job offer for someone who nearly ran WBAI into the ground, including allegedly 4 months rent not paid on the studio and 2 months not paid for the antenna.
Speaking of Pacifica, former CFO Lonnie Hicks is suing the Pacifica Foundation. The wrongful termination suit alleges that
Pacifica Radio governance factions use guerrilla warfare to coerce those who are different from themselves along racial and political lines, and "acts in an intolerant, capricious, discriminatory, retaliatory, prejudicial and coercive manner" and "believe that the ends ... justify the means."Technorati tags: WBAI, Tony Riddle, Pacifica, radio

Meet the McLovins, a jam band that covers Phish, the Meters and Weather Report and improvises extensively on their original tunes.
The trio is comprised of Jake (Drumlovin), Jason (Basslovin) and Jeff (Axlovin).Jeff is still in middle school!!!
Check out the video for "You Enjoy Myself" below, and click here to listen to a full live-set recording from one of their gigs in the Hartford area.

The plague of the jam band scene
This video is from the Nassau Coliseum lot last night. You can hear the tanks hissing in the background. Look at all the balloons on the ground. Nitrous oxide, a.k.a. hippie crack, is a plague on the scene. It was out of control at the Klein in Bridgeort when the Disco Biscuits played there, and apparently Nassau had the worst gas scene of the Dead 2009 tour.
The nitrous dealers are organized thugs, and they must be stopped.

Interview with The Barber
Sunday, April 12th, 1:30 p.m.I'll be interviewing Jon Gutwillig of the Disco Biscuits.
Uniting elements of electronic dance music with more traditional forms of American rock, the Disco Biscuits have long established themselves as one of the most exciting - and influential - touring bands in the country. In the late 90s, the band pioneered a unique style of music, often referred to as "trance-fusion," that distinguished them from their peers, while heavily influencing an entire generation of younger "livetronica" acts.
The Disco Biscuits will be playing The Klein in Bridgeport on April 19th.
UPDATE: For whatever reason, the interview didn't happen. If I can reschedule it I'll post a note.

Playlist, March 29, 2009
Sorry, no playlist this week. We're in the middle of fundraising, and I was told to follow a format, read a script and play the CDs we were offering as premiums. So much for WPKN's long tradition of unformatted radio and programmer autonomy.
Griping aside, go to their web site and donate. Despite the crap sandwich they're serving for this pledge drive, it's still one of the last bastions of decent radio left and they deserve your support.
Just to save you the trouble of tuning in, here's WPKN, Inc.'s fundraising script as rendered in GarageBand.

Help Zach Deputy save the show!
Zach Deputy needs your help!
Technorati tags: music, Zach Deputy
On Friday the 13th, at about 10:40pm, Zach Deputy had his tour truck with all of his gear and equipment stolen from a La Qunita parking lot in Paramus, NJ. Zach performs more than 250 shows per year throughout the Eastern United States and Canada, and is on the road about 300 days a year, thus all of his clothing and every other item one can imagine for his personal life was also in the truck. Zach was on his way to a recording studio in Woodstock, NY at the time, and-- in addition to the instruments and electronic gear needed to perform and record this record-- many tracks that had been previously recorded were in the computer he lost in the theft. If you can, please visit the link above and help stimulate the Zach Deputy economy with a little good-hearted spending.

Brunch concert with Boris Garcia & Eddy Lawrence
Sunday, March 1st, 12:00 noon
Boris Garcia with special guest Eddy Lawrence
Live at the WPKN studio
Bands happen because they're meant to be...because they contain an energy that simply must find expression. To be clear, Boris Garcia isn't a person, it's a band. Inspired by their predecessors: The Grateful Dead, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, Railroad Earth and Yonder Mountain String Band, Boris Garcia has cleverly twisted the free form spirit of the Jam Band scene with folk, jazz, blues, and the joyous fluidity of bluegrass music to forge their own sound: Jam Grass.
Eddy Lawrence is a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with nine solo albums to his credit. Dirty Linen calls his album, “Inside My Secret Pocket”, “a pure delight”, and says “With a cynical eye and wry sense of humor, Lawrence exudes a world-weary attitude that is reminiscent of John Prine at his smarmy best.”
In concert, Lawrence is known for his humorous way with a story and his fluid flatpicking and fingerstyle guitar work. He is accompanied by his wife Kim, who plays upright bass. The Lawrences have recently released a new all-acoustic album of original songs, “My Second Wife’s First Album”.
The performance begins as 12 noon and everybody is invited. Admission is free. For directions or reservations, call (203) 331-9756.

RIP Louie Bellson
We regret to announce the unexpected passing of Louie Bellson on Feb 14, 2009.
Tenative plans are for an L.A. area funeral, followed by funeral and burial in Moline, Illinois, his boyhood home. Details forthcoming.
Referred to by Duke Ellington as “not only the world’s greatest drummer...(but also) the world’s greatest musician!”, Louie Bellson has expressed himself on drums since age three. At 15, he pioneered the double bass drum set-up. At 17, he triumphed over 40,000 drummers to win the Gene Krupa drumming contest.
He has performed on more than 200 albums with such greats as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Woody Herman, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Louie Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Joe Williams, Wayne Newton and Bellson’s late wife Pearl Bailey.
In March 2007, Bellson and 35 other jazz greats received the Living Jazz Legends Award from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. In June 2007, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers inducted Bellson as a Living Legend in the ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame ceremony, Jazz at the Lincoln Center, New York City.
His new big-band CD with trumpeter Clark Terry, "LOUIE & CLARK EXPEDITION 2" was released in early 2008.
Here's Louie on the Tonight Show playing "Don't Get Around Much Any More."

Live music on the air!
Sunday, February 15th, 12:00 noon
Stretching the parameters of acoustic swing, Caravan of Thieves has been winning immediate praise for their new and unique brand of gypsy flavored song writing and their high intensity show. The vocal harmonizing, acoustic guitar spanking husband and wife duo Fuzz and Carrie have now extended their family to include fiery violinist Ben Dean and double bass madman, Brian Anderson to complete their colorful vision. Our live broadcast at the WPKN studio is free and all are welcome.
Coming up on Sunday, March 1st:
12:00 noon - Boris Garcia - A self-styled "jamgrass" band with some great songwriting and playing
1:15 p.m. - Eddy Lawrence - This Alabama-born, New Jersey-based songwriter creates wry and insightful songs with an urban but Southern sensibility.

The Dead Spring Tour 2009 "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"
I wasn't going to post anything about the ticket prices and VIP tour packages for The Dead's 2009 spring tour. It's disappointing that tickets are out of my price range, but that's life. Then I heard this rant. It's worth a listen.
The audio is not safe for work!
UPDATE 4/14/2009: Hello Deadheads! You can get song-by-song tweets here http://twitter.com/tourtweet. You can listen to the Greensboro show here. Enjoy.
UPDATE 4/26/09: Listen to the audience recordings on Archive.org.
UPDATE 5/16/09: Apparently this is the last night of their tour, and Sirius is carrying the show live. Back in the day, the Grateful Dead would occasionally broadcast a concert on a local radio station. Now you have to subscribe to satellite radio to get the broadcast. It goes along with the $100 ticket prices.
UPDATE 2/25/10: It looks like the video was removed. Supposedly Bob Weir was on CNBC's "Street Signs" announcing that Furthur ticket prices would be around $40, but I haven't been able to find the article.

UPDATE 2/25/10: It looks like the video was removed. Supposedly Bob Weir was on CNBC's "Street Signs" announcing that Furthur ticket prices would be around $40, but I haven't been able to find the article.

RIP Freddie Hubbard
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Grammy-winning jazz musician Freddie Hubbard, whose style influenced a generation of trumpet players, has died at age 70.Here's Freddie playing Canteloupe Island with Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter & Tony Williams.
Hubbard's manager, David Weiss, says the musician died Monday at Sherman Oaks Hospital in Los Angeles. He had been hospitalized since suffering a heart attack last month.
Although he had been in declining health in recent years, Hubbard continued to perform until just a few months ago. Known for both the intensity of his playing, as well as his melodic style, Hubbard's last concert was in June in New York at a party celebrating the release of his final album.
He won a Grammy in 1972 for best jazz performance by a group for the album "First Light."

One more before I go to bed. This is an outtake from the Grateful Dead Movie. I don't know what it is, but I love that crackling funky sound the Dead had in 1974.

Mets get rid of Heilman, get a Putz
It's pronounced "puts" and he's supposed to be good, but after what I've seen coming out of the Mets bullpen the past two years the headline seemed appropriate. J.J. Putz will be the setup man for Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez. Schoeneweis and Smith are also gone, with Sean Green coming in for middle relief. Let's hope that Omar Minaya made the right moves.

RIP George Kirschner
George was a legendary history teacher at the former Walden School in New York. He lived well into his 80s, lucid until the end. George's influence was felt far and wide among his former students of many years. I was not as attentive or engaged as I could have been when I had him for 11th grade American History, but he made the subject come alive. Farewell, teacher. You will be missed.
UPDATE: A lot of people are landing here from Google and going to the guestbook. Hello to all Walden alumni & faculty. Here's a link to Doctors Without Borders.
