WPKN Benefit Concert with Hoe and Cinnamon Sky

Hey now! Two WPKN programmers will be bringing their bands to the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport on Thursday, June 30th for an evening of bluegrass and Americana. We have some surprise guests lined up as well.

Admission is $10 and the proceeds support WPKN's broadcast of Radio Vibes from the Gathering of the Vibes.

Hoe
Wednesday night bluegrass DJ Chris Teskey will be appearing with Hoe.
Drawing on an array of diverse influences, this string band (3-part vocals, guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass) ignores barriers and boundaries to create a sound that is at once timeless and timely. It is as adept at picking a traditional fiddle tune, a Bill Monroe classic, as it is interpreting a Beatles number or one of its own original compositions.

Cinnamon Sky

Sunday morning jazz and jam band host David Golden will be appearing with Cinnamon Sky.
People tend to think of us as a country band, something that I strongly disagree with. If we have to be put into a class I'd rather it be Americana. Kinda folk, bluegrass, southern rock, cowboy, country and rockabilly all rolled in together.

I hope to see you at the Acoustic Cafe for a night of good friends and great music.

Good news and bad news

Good news and bad news this week. Sarah Blacker's star-crossed weekend will not bring her anywhere near Bridgeport. Instead, we will chat on the phone and listen to some tracks from her new CD. The good news is we've added Commercial Interruption to the lineup on June 12th. If you like Zappa and surf music, you won't want to miss Commercial Interruption.

TomTom Recalls Bob Weir Voice

Dutch navigation equipment maker TomTom NV(TOM2.AE) Friday said it is abandoning efforts to develop a Bob Weir voice for its GPS navigation systems. The Grateful Dead-themed voice package was scheduled for release in July, but failed important usability tests in late development, a company spokesman said.

“The recording with Bob went well, but the software had a difficult time parsing his phrases,” said Molly Vandergeld. “The simplest of directions were garbled and users were getting hopelessly lost.”

One tester, speaking on condition of anonymity, said “At first the directions were clear. Then it would bunch up all the words in a direction so I couldn’t understand it. After a while it started forgetting the words. It finally led me to a bus stop where I abandoned the car and got on the bus.”

TomTom had a success with its Star Wars-themed voice download series, and was hoping for similar sales with the Grateful Dead series. Vandergeld declined to comment on future plans for the series.
