Another reason the Yankees turn my stomach

The New York Post treats us with way too much information today.

Forget steroids.
Yankee slugger Jason Giambi tries putting pop in his bat with a performance-enhancing thong.
The scandal-scarred first baseman reportedly has admitted that he dons a sensual, tiger-striped, gold lamé undergarment in a bid to boost his confidence when his bat goes cold.
"I only put it on when I'm desperate to get out of a big slump," Giambi told Portfolio magazine's Franz Lidz.
What's more, he has loaned the magic thong to past and current Yanks Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano and Robin Ventura when they went into hitless streaks.

And Yankees fans give me snide remarks when they see my son in a Mets t-shirt.

Lamest. Reunion. Ever.

My high school class was pretty lame, and as far as I know, never got it together to have a reunion. The school itself is long-defunct. I just got an e-vite for our 30th anniversary reunion. The same pattern from high school is holding.

• '76 - a very cool class, people I looked up to, and their 30th reunion sounded really cool with a more formal evening and a picnic the next day. Only The Blog Knows Brooklyn got a lot of mileage blogging her reunion planning, the actual event, and aftermath. Of course, OTBKB is a very engaging writer and it was a fun read, especially since I knew her classmates.
• '77 - not quite as cool as '77 but still cool, and their 30th reunion was an evening in someone's apartment
• '78 - lame, and the reunion is going to be in the afternoon in the same building that housed our former school. Sounds absolutely craptastic.

I am blessed with my daughters' gymnastics show that afternoon, and have a handy excuse to avoid this event. Maybe I can sit in my basement office, flip through my yearbook, and read OTBKB again. At some point my flashback will be interruped by one of my kids showing me his or her latest creation in GarageBand or iMovie.

I grew up. My kids are growing up. It's good to be alive. End of story.

Zappa and Jazz

I don’t consider my Zappa project any kind of crusade or following any trend for that matter. It’s just music I love. I’m often asked if the jazz community will ever embrace Zappa’s music. I have no idea. I don’t even really care. Maybe that’s a selfish point of view, but life is short. Why waste time worrying about such stuff. Zappa himself said before he died that he didn’t care how he was remembered or even IF he was remembered. Eventually, I and my band will stop doing this Zappa project and go back to my original material, once again happily outnumbering the audience.

They went onto private property, opened my mailbox and put their flyer in without mailing it.

Mailable matter not bearing postage found in or on private mail receptacles represents a revenue deficiency to the Postal Service and is a violation of federal law. Title 18 United States Code, section 1725, provides for a fine of not more than $300 per piece for these violations. All employees must uniformly enforce the procedures detailed in the Domestic Mail Manual, section P011.2.0. The failure to enforce these procedures uniformly may jeopardize the criminal prosecution of repeated violators.

If they can't even advertise without breaking the law, I wouldn't want them working on my roof.

Agro River Parking: service with a snarl

I pulled into the lot of the convenience store & office plaza on River Street in Milford. I know there's a back part where people pay to park for the train station, but I was in the front near the businesses. The guy from Agro River Parking comes over and tells me it's $7 to park or I get towed.

That's fine if I were parking all day, but $7 for 10 minutes is not reasonable. After he explained it the first time and I was already going back to my car, he kept repeating himself. What a dick. I got the point the first time. Seven bucks to park.

I wonder if Mr. King-of-the-Lot hassles everyone who tries to park there, or just the ones who get near his outpost.

Hotel Owners and Sheriff Warn of Disturbing New Trend

VESTAL, New York - The Broome County Sheriff's office and a local association of Hotel Owners are working together to combat a new trend in vandalism. "Raging"--a trend among young concert-goers who follow jam bands--has gotten out of control and is threatening the livelihood of hotel owners across the country. The Binghamton Lodging Association and the Broome County Sheriff's office have started a joint initiative to combat the hazard.

"Today marks a new day in commercial lodging security. No longer will hard-working operators be threatened and shut down by rowdy customers," said Deputy Sheriff Bill Wickman.

Vijay Balasubramanian has owned the Motel 6 on Old Route 17 for eight years. He has come to dread the times when touring bands pass through the area. He paused from buffing the floor in his lobby to say, "When I first come to America, they told me to watch out for the rock bands. There is never a problem with the bands, except when Dave Matthews parked his tour bus in my lot and emptied his toilet tank in the storm drain. It is the young customers who are trouble. All night they are raging and hanging off the balcony like a train in India."

Hotel operators are now collecting a "damage deposit" in advance, a practice which has upset some concert-goers. Chad Willis IV, who prefers to be called "The Rev," complained bitterly about the new practice: "They be profilin' us. I mean, can't we all just unzz out together?"

But hoteliers like Balasubramanian are unsympathetic. "I have been lucky, but my cousin Venkat had big problems. These ragers drove a Chevy Caprice into his lobby. Every time there is a concert, one kid tries to pay for his room in molly. This is not a bazaar, it is a legitimate business."
