Worm Town needs your help!

I'm passing this message on from the woman who ran the Worm Town Kids Tent at the Gathering of the Vibes. She lost almost everything in Seaside Park and needs your help.

Monday when we packed up the Kids Tent...

We all worked extremely long hours, and put sooo much time and effort into this years Vibes Kids Zone. We had workshops on all days, (4 on Saturday), the Parade, Andy the Music Man was awesome, the volunteers were incredible, face painters were nuts, the Teen Scene was outta sight. It was BY FAR the best we've ever done with just under 500 children, and I felt most triumphant.

Everything was packed and separated: Bins going to Bisco and bins to store for WormFest.

On Monday afternoon, I had to get my vehicle to the garage before closing and I left the Kids Tent stuff unattended at 1pm waiting to be packed into the Penske. Sometime between 3pm & 4pm, ALL of the Kids Tent bins had been completely riffled through and mostly stolen.

They took all of the equipment, lights, cords, tools, spray paint. They demolished our Boo-Boo Station with diapers, wipes, sanitizer, sun block and bug spray. They stole all of our art kits, beads, staplers, scissors and glue...everything. Except for the bag of stuffed animals, and the bins of old busted up toys. They left all the big Plastic motor toys, board games, and bins of paper.

It was my fault for not having stayed with the stuff knowing the Park was then open to the public. With 3 kids in tow , a poorly running set of wheels and an exhausted crew, I told myself it would be fine, for an hour or two.

When I got to Bisco and saw what was left of the Kids Tent that has taken me 6 years to collect, after yelling and swearing my head off, I cried my eyes out. I felt completely defeated.


So, I come to you, Vibe Tribe. If anyone has any donations they can kick out to the Kids Tent at WormFest next month, we would be eternally grateful!

Blogging of the Vibes

We're in the middle of the second day of the Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport's Seaside Park. Railroad Earth is playing right now, sounding good on Radio Vibes. It's been a lot of work setting up this broadcast, but we've been on the air since yesterday morning. Working with Tiger Rose has been fun. We are in a production tent behind the stage with our own plasma screen to watch the video feed. It was sweltering in there yesterday, but today it was a great place to stay out of the rain. I'm home now, warm and dry.

Wavy Gravy summed it up best this afternoon: "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing."

Almost everybody is having a good time, although I'm sure you could find a few complainers in the crowd. U-Melt played a great set to kick things off yesterday, and Dark Star Orchestra with Donna Jean sitting in was amazing.

You can hear most of the festival on WPKN all weekend.

Oh yes, the Bridgeport police ride around on Segways.
UPDATE: (7/28/08) I'm not sure why this page is getting so many visits, but I guess it's because we're so close to the Vibes. There's coverage on the Radio Vibes on WPKN blog, and personal observations here on this blog.

A Whale Blows in Brooklyn

The Gowanus Lounge updates a report on a whale sighting in Brooklyn. Not in the ocean off Coney Island, mind you, but in the infamous Gowanus Canal. Will wonders never cease.

Marine biologists are on the scene and say the whale appears to be in good health. They also say the whale will be hard to coax away from the Gowanus unless he/she actually wants to leave.

It's probably nothing to worry about unless the whale shows up in Park Slope pushing a double-wide stroller.

UPDATE: Sludgie died late Wednesday afternoon. WCBS-TV also points out that the whale was in Gowanus Bay, but not the canal itself.

Flood

I got water in my basement. Not a lot, but the couple of inches I got were enough to ruin my office and make a big mess. Blogging will be very light until I get back to normal. At this point I don't even know what I'm going to learn between 11 p.m. and 12 midnight.

The strangely-colored chip

We went to T.G.I. Friday's the other day. The chips are branded in company livery, white and red. The red chips have a disturbing scarlet color. It looks kind of orange here, but the actual color is a brighter red.

The Great American (Idol) Songbook

I finally got what I've been wanting to see--standards on American Idol. Melinda and Lakisha knocked it out of the park as usual. There never has been any doubt it will be these two in the final. Sanjaya gave us a nice reading of "Dancing Cheek to Cheek," and Phil got stuck with a crooning, sweetened arrangement of "Night and Day" that completely took the shine off the song.

Back to pop next week, but it was nice to hear the songs I like for a change.

UPDATE: Jordin's turn with "On A Clear Day" was also star quality. Most poignant moment: Gina Glocksen singing "Smile" after being eliminated.

Today in history

Fifteen years ago I met my wife. Somebody brought her to a bar to see my band play, and we began flirting immediately. Two years later we were married.

Also on this date, in 1986, I went to a Grateful Dead concert in Portland, Maine after a long winter of personal turmoil and despair. The snow snapped me out of my depression and started me on a new path. It was a major turning point in my life.

While the 3/28/86 show was good, this gem from 3/28/73 is mind-melting.

Rats

There's been a big turnover this week. We had a massive die-off last week, and the toll included my favorite rat Jenny, her son Vanilla, and three pink-eyed whites. Joining us this is a family of four Siamese rats. I'll post pictures when I get a chance.

On the wild side, I found a defunct intruder in the basement a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately the concrete floor was very cold, and she was well-preserved at the time of discovery. Last week also saw the removal of an unhappy cherry tree in the yard and a large brush pile that was home to a lot of rats. This opens up a whole new area of what used to be the disreputable corner of my property. I'm still seeing some rats running around, but as I block their tunnels I hope they move along.

Rats enjoy a day in the Sun

The New York Sun has an article about rats today.

Many watched last month as rats nearly turned a Greenwich Village KFC/Taco Bell into a Cirque de Soleil stage, resulting in subsequent fast food restaurant closings and the removal of a health inspector.

The article mentions a friend of ours who adopted two of our baby rats a couple of years ago.

One who does not hate rats is illustrator Drusilla Kehl, who has 23 so-called fancy rats as pets. She said domestic rats are as different from street rats as a pedigreed dog is from a wild dog. One thing the pet and wild rodents have in common is "they live short and breed fast."

I don't have any tattoos, but if I were ever to get one, it would be a rat drawn by Drusilla's partner Matt. (The article got his name wrong.)

Oh, a note for the Sun editor: if something is "so-called," then so call it.

Funeral

We said goodbye to my wife's uncle today. He was old and sick, and just wasn't himself any more. He sure didn't look like himself in the casket. That's one more reason why I want to have a Jewish funeral; no makeup and nobody seeing me look like a bad mannequin of myself.

It was bitter cold at the cemetary, perhaps 15°F with a nasty wind. Everybody behind the immediate family crushed into one big huddle to keep warm, and people were trying not to laugh as the priest said his final words into the wind.

The reception was nice. There was another funeral in the next room of the restaurant behind a glass partition, and one guy really looked like Elton John. Despite the sad occasion, we enjoyed being with each other and remembering the departed.
