Sunday Brunch Concerts: Fall Line-up

September 23rd – One Way Track

One Way Track, from Orange, consists of: John Kaluzinski: Guitar,Vocals, A soothing soulful singer is a founding member of the band; Sean Mack: Mandolin,Guitar,Vocals, Is a multi instrumentalist and also a founding member of the band; Tom McNulty: Banjo,Guitar,Vocals, Has performed various genres of music from Irish Folk to Rock and Roll; Patrick Haddon: Bass,Provides the foundation and bottom end and brings with him many musical influences.

October 14th – String Band

A very diverse, bouncy jam-band sensibility leaning towards a folk rock sound, definitely trying to be psychedelic for you, but with a kicking country-rock flavor. Makes you want to get up and dance....or stumble...or wonder what the hell is this?

October 21st – Sandy Connolly Band

Sandy was originally trained in the depths of the Southland to sing opera, as her father was an opera buff and wept to hear her sing in that manner.  Her parents sent her to school to study classically, but she had the fortunate opportunity in 1986 to hear Bonnie Raitt in an intimate concert on Martha’s Vineyard.  There she found her musical calling:  the blues and rock n’ roll.  Throwing dirt on her pure tone and getting all gravely and groovy was way more fun, and way more people liked to listen to it. Her latest project is forming the Sandy Connolly Band, which is Sam Bradford on lead guitar, Freddie Rathbun on bass, and Vic Dias on drums. 

November 11th – Adela and Jude

An amazing combination of enthusiastic performance and superbly crafted songs, the brilliant interaction between Adela & Jude make for a truly enjoyable show. Performing with a fever pitch of old-time revivalist preachers - Adela & Jude exude a chemistry that shines through in their vocal and stage performance. The duo stomps, hollers and brings to life the familiar and forgotten musical giants that cast long shadows over American music.

Mountains of the Moon

It seemed like the first clear night in almost two weeks, and I finally got back outside with the telescope. The moon is the dominant feature of the night sky, a bright gibbous lighting my back yard. I put the 9mm eyepiece in and concentrated on the terminator and edges. There were some nice mountainous regions with the craters well highlighted. 

Saturn was a challenge because of the moon's glare, but a got a quick view with the 9mm. The wind was just enough to make things a big shaky, but I still had a few moments of the gold ball with its rings.

We have a bunch of things to test this morning at the Radio Golden Quality Assurance Lab. The times are accurate in an approximate way.

• 11:00 a.m. – Interview with Ray Kairys from The Electrix. They're part of the the benefit show for WPKN taking place next Sunday at the BrickHouse Brewery in Patchogue.
• 11:05 a.m. – Summer 1982. Much has been made of the Grateful Dead's legendary Europe '72 tour in light of its 40th anniversary, and more importantly, the release of every show on that tour. Well, I'm not Rhino Records or Grateful Dead™ Marketing, so I'll leave the heavy lifting to the professionals. Instead, there's the 30th anniversary of a pretty good run of shows in Grateful Dead history: the 1982 Summer Tour. Today's show contains the first installment of this series. 
• 12:00 p.m. – Interview with Danny Kean. He's also playing at the BrickHouse Brewery next Sunday.
• 12:55 p.m. – Your favorite part of WPKN's programming: the mandatory five-minute-feels-like-a-lifetime PSA break.

1. Carl Franklin – Waiting for the Summer to Come. Carl is not only a skilled audio engineer, but a musician as well. He plays drums, bass, piano, guitar, and sings.
2. The Rivergods – Squeezin’. They call themselves “a roots/folk/alt.country/ whatever outfit.” This is a nice song about one of my favorite things.
3. Matt Miklus and Friends – Long Time Coming. Matt’s been around the Connecticut scene a long time, best known for his guitar playing in Hubinger St. He’s more of an acoustic guy now. You can hear Matt with the Nameless Trio live on the Sunday Brunch Concert, April 29, 1:00 PM on WPKN 89.5.
4. Little Ugly – Bag of Bones. The Hartford Advocate’s 2011 Grand Band Slam winners show their songwriting prowess here. This is acoustic rock at its finest.
5. Daria Musk – Ghost. Daria is a singer-songwriter with an incredible voice. She unlocked the potential of the Google+ “hangout” feature, and quickly found a global audience.

Interview with Ken Hays at Gathering of the Vibes HQ

On 04/03/12, I sat down for a talk with Gathering of the Vibes founder and organizer, Ken Hays, about how the festival got started, what it takes to keep it going, and the 2012 lineup. LSP was there with cameras rolling.

The "Wagon Wheel" Project

I was thinking, which is usually a bad thing. In doing so, I came up with a remarkably bad idea that's too good not to share. It seems that the song "Wagon Wheel" is de rigeur for every roots/bluegrass/Americana band out there. Well, what about everyone else?

I hereby propose the Wagon Wheel Project. If your band plays that song—even if you don't—send me a recording in the style of your choice. Play it straight and sincere, put the eyebrows on it, or destroy it completely. I don't care, as long as you have fun playing it. Once I have accumulated enough cover versions of Wagon Wheel, I will devote a set of air time to them all.
