Chomsky on Democracy Now: Israel should "leave"

Noam Chomsky appeared on Democracy Now! about a week ago. He compared George Washington a terrorist and said Israel should leave, meaning Israel should leave Earth.

Charles at Little Green Footballs sums it up nicely:
When Chomsky suggests Israel should “leave,” he’s saying the same thing as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: Israel should leave the face of the earth.
I hope Democracy Now! never disgraces the airwaves at WPKN.

RIP David "Fathead" Newman

KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) — Jazz musician David "Fathead" Newman, who was a tenor soloist with the Ray Charles Band, died Tuesday. He was 75.

His manager, Karen Newman, said Newman died of pancreatic cancer in a hospital in Kingston, N.Y.

A Dallas native, Newman left college to tour with Charlie Parker's mentor, Buster Smith.

According to his Web site, Newman spent twelve years with the Ray Charles Band starting in 1954. He began as the baritone player and became the star tenor soloist.

He returned to Dallas and led his own bands before moving to New York City. As a studio musician he worked on recording projects with musicians including Herby Mann, Aretha Franklin and Aaron Neville.

WPKN is confused about the U.S. government

From yesterday's program listings on the WPKN Today blog:
11:00 a.m. to 3 p.m.: SPECIAL INAUGURATION COVERAGE:
WPKN will be carrying the historic inaugural ceremonies of President-elect Barack Obama. This will usher out the eight year reign of George W. Bush and for many Americans the swearing in of the first African-American President of the Unites States, signifies real possibility for political, economic and social change.
Presidents don't reign; they serve a term as defined in the United States Constitution.

The Global Intifada

Citizen photojournalist Zombie has a terrific--and horrific--photo essay about the simultaneous anti-Israel, pro-Hamas, pro-genocide tantrums around the world on January 10th.

UPDATE: Welcome to my friends from the State Department. This is primarily a music blog, but I believe Israel in particular and Jews in general are the canaries in the coal mine. I hope you're paying attention.

The Dead Spring Tour 2009 "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"

I wasn't going to post anything about the ticket prices and VIP tour packages for The Dead's 2009 spring tour. It's disappointing that tickets are out of my price range, but that's life. Then I heard this rant. It's worth a listen.
The audio is not safe for work!

UPDATE 4/14/2009: Hello Deadheads! You can get song-by-song tweets here http://twitter.com/tourtweet. You can listen to the Greensboro show here. Enjoy.

UPDATE 4/26/09: Listen to the audience recordings on Archive.org.

UPDATE 5/16/09: Apparently this is the last night of their tour, and Sirius is carrying the show live. Back in the day, the Grateful Dead would occasionally broadcast a concert on a local radio station. Now you have to subscribe to satellite radio to get the broadcast. It goes along with the $100 ticket prices.

UPDATE 2/25/10:  It looks like the video was removed. Supposedly Bob Weir was on CNBC's "Street Signs" announcing that Furthur ticket prices would be around $40, but I haven't been able to find the article.

Can we call it anti-Semitism now?

Zombie has a great photo essay about the latest anti-Jewish protest in San Francisco. The argument that it's just about Israel or Zionism no longer is credible. The mask is off.

Jews, arm yourselves.

Vandals deface three Chicago synagogues

A disturbing report from the Chicao Sun-Times:
Vandals spray-painted the words “Death to Israel’’ on two synagogues and a Jewish school early Saturday in three separate incidents police say could be linked and are being investigated as hate crimes.

In each case, the vandals — at times donning masks — used orange-colored paint, also shattering glass windows with bricks and rocks at two of the buildings.
