RIP Freddie Hubbard

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Grammy-winning jazz musician Freddie Hubbard, whose style influenced a generation of trumpet players, has died at age 70.

Hubbard's manager, David Weiss, says the musician died Monday at Sherman Oaks Hospital in Los Angeles. He had been hospitalized since suffering a heart attack last month.

Although he had been in declining health in recent years, Hubbard continued to perform until just a few months ago. Known for both the intensity of his playing, as well as his melodic style, Hubbard's last concert was in June in New York at a party celebrating the release of his final album.

He won a Grammy in 1972 for best jazz performance by a group for the album "First Light."
Here's Freddie playing Canteloupe Island with Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter & Tony Williams.

Tuesday

If you and your cronies see a successful project and you want a cut of the action or a say in how it's run, you are gangsters. If the Board of Directors gives you approval to operate in such a manner, the organization is corrupt.

More Fairness Doctrine talk

Following a comment from Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) about bringing back the Fairness Doctrine, Brent Littlefield wrote this piece in Pajamas Media.

Battle Lines Being Drawn in Fight Over Fairness Doctrine
Why do they say it’s needed? They claim the federal government must ensure local stations fully cover local news and topics of the day. However, those promoting the new Fairness Doctrine come from the politically correct left, which is incensed that conservative-minded talk show hosts have large ratings, large audiences, and big paychecks.

Liberal activists want the federal government to determine if a station is balanced and providing politically correct programming in our neighborhoods. Just imagine, if you will, a federal bureaucrat hops on a plane and travels from Washington to a local rural radio station. That bureaucrat then walks in to tell a station manager what to put on the air.

Yes, Virginia, they would be coming from the government and they would only be there to help. Or so the activists promoting the Fairness Doctrine want you to believe.
WPKN had a big internal quarrel over fairness doctrine principles regarding their "right to respond/personal commentary disclaimer" a few years ago, and it was the station's "progressive activists" who were against it. The guideline for the left seems to be "free speech for me, but none for thee."

Mets get rid of Heilman, get a Putz

It's pronounced "puts" and he's supposed to be good, but after what I've seen coming out of the Mets bullpen the past two years the headline seemed appropriate. J.J. Putz will be the setup man for Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez. Schoeneweis and Smith are also gone, with Sean Green coming in for middle relief. Let's hope that Omar Minaya made the right moves.

RIP George Kirschner

George was a legendary history teacher at the former Walden School in New York. He lived well into his 80s, lucid until the end. George's influence was felt far and wide among his former students of many years. I was not as attentive or engaged as I could have been when I had him for 11th grade American History, but he made the subject come alive. Farewell, teacher. You will be missed.
KIRSCHNER--George. Beloved grandfather and greatgrandfather, father, husband, teacher, and friend will be remembered for his contagious smile and energy, unwavering principles, profound sense of justice, unequivocal commitment to activism, and open and welcoming heart. Born in New York City, George served in the US Coast Guard during WWII. He began as a brewer, later went to college, and found his professional love as a teacher of history at the Walden School in New York City. He is survived by his children, Carl and Sandy, his grandchildren Emily, Jessie, Jonathan and Amanda, and his great-granddaughter Mia. Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders.
UPDATE: You can leave comments for George's family in the guestbook.

UPDATE: A lot of people are landing here from Google and going to the guestbook. Hello to all Walden alumni & faculty. Here's a link to Doctors Without Borders.

An avid reader and insatiable intellectual, he had an astute mind for such diverse fields as 20th Century American and European art, history, music, contemporary humor, and military aviation. Victor is best known as the host of "Jazz Classics", a weekly show broadcast on WPKN radio devoted to American Jazz from the 1920's to the end the swing era, which was one of the longest running WPKN programs. As the voice of "Jazz Classics", Victor had a strong fan base of admiring listeners, and was widely known for his authoritative commentary on the lives and musical styles of legendary players and singers.

Schumer talks Fairness Doctrine

The polls haven't even closed yet, but Chuck Schumer is already talking about reinstating the Fairness Doctrine.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday defended the so-called Fairness Doctrine in an interview on Fox News, saying, “I think we should all be fair and balanced, don’t you?”

Schumer’s comments echo other Democrats’ views on reviving the Fairness Doctrine, which would require radio stations to balance conservative hosts with liberal ones.
The Fairness Doctrine was one enshrined in WPKN's Constitution, even long after is ceased to be law. A few years ago there was a long, bitter struggle within WPKN over the station's personal commentary disclaimer. The station's leftist producers found it inconvenient to disclose that the content of their programs did not reflect the views of WPKN or its licensee and invite listener response. The commentary disclaimer/response invitation was eventually relegated to weekday evenings around 6:30, appropriately following the left-slanted Free Speech Radio News.

If the Fairness Doctrine once again becomes law due to Democratic control of Congress, the squealing from WPKN's news & public affairs producers should be very entertaining.

WPKN folded, according to Long Island newspaper

The East Hampton Press is reporting that WPKN folded, although it is not certain when.

In an article published this week announcing a local studio in Springs, NY, the paper stated
The station was founded in 1963 by the University of Bridgeport. It was sold some years later, when the university’s radio station folded, to its own membership. It is run and owned by a board of directors that is elected each year by the members, according to Mr. Ernst.
I've been at WPKN for many years, and to my knowledge the station never folded. Learn something new every day.

Going John Galt

Dr. Helen Smith wonders if it's time to "go John Galt" -- a reference to the hero of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, who led a strike of the productive industrialists against the government backed looters.
Obama talks about taking from those who are productive and redistributing to those who are not — or who are not as successful. If success and productivity is to be punished, why bother? Perhaps it is time for those of us who make the money and pay the taxes to take it easy, live on less, and let the looters of the world find their own way.

My question to readers is, what are some ways to “go John Galt” (legally, of course) — that is, should productive people cut back on what they need, make less money, and take it easy so that the government is starved for funds, or is there some other way of making a statement?
Think "going Galt" is too extreme? Watch this video and think again.

Family Told Obama NOT To Wear Soldier Son's Bracelet

NewsBusters has the story, including audio from a radio interview with the solder's father.
Barack Obama played the "me too" game during the Friday debates on September 26 after Senator John McCain mentioned that he was wearing a bracelet with the name of Cpl. Matthew Stanley, a resident of New Hampshire and a soldier that lost his life in Iraq in 2006. Obama said that he too had a bracelet. After fumbling and straining to remember the name, he revealed that his had the name of Sergeant Ryan David Jopek of Merrill, Wisconsin.

Shockingly, however, Madison resident Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan Jopek, the young soldier who tragically lost his life to a roadside bomb in 2006, recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his family had asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his son's name on it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the family.

Read the transcript and listen to the interview. If you didn't already think Obama was a cynical Chicago machine politician, you will now.

Astroturfing the Obama campaign

Is a large PR firm connected to the Obama campaign spreading false rumors about Gov. Sarah Palin in a way that appears to be a grassroots effort? Rusty Shackleford thinks so, and presents a compelling case against Winner & Associates and Obama's chief media strategist David Axelrod.

Hope, Change, & Lies: Orchestrated "Grassroots" Smear Campaigns & the People that Run Them
Extensive research was conducted by the Jawa Report to determine the source of smears directed toward Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Those smears included false allegations that she belonged to a secessionist political party and that she has radical anti-American views.

Our research suggests that a subdivision of one of the largest public relations firms in the world most likely started and promulgated rumors about Sarah Palin that were known to be false. These rumors were spread in a surreptitious manner to avoid exposure.

It is also likely that the PR firm was paid by outside sources to run the smear campaign. While not conclusive, evidence suggests a link to the Barack Obama campaign.
Read it all.

KPFA meltdown and the opportunists

A few weeks ago KPFA management called the police to remove somebody from the studio. The ongoing drama from this incident has made for amusing reading, if only because it makes WPKN look like paradise.

Much to my surprise, a group from KPFA wrote a letter to the Berkeley Daily Planet that isn't completely crazy. In fact, it almost sounds sane.
They have used KPFA’s airwaves to launch sensationalized reports that are both false (reporting a sprained arm as a broken one, and a pregnancy that did not exist), mistargeted (calling for the resignation of two managers who had nothing to do with the decision to call the police), and self-serving (concluding one on-air segment with a demand for a regular show).
What a surprise--Nadra Foster and her supporters lied.

The Denver freak show begins

The level of discourse on WPKN will probably be about the same, minus the vulgarity during daytime hours.

The RIAA's latest victims: Muxtape and Pandora

Playlist-Assembling Site Muxtape Shuts Down To Sort Out RIAA Issues
You had to see this one coming. Less than six months after becoming the hipster time-wasting destination of choice, popular music-sharing site Muxtape was suddenly offline on Monday. Fans of the site — which allowed users to assemble mixtape-like playlists online that were available for others to stream — were greeted by the message, "Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA."

The site did not offer further elaboration of its troubles with the Recording Industry Association of America — the trade group that lobbies on behalf of the recording industry, and the force behind thousands of lawsuits against individuals for illegally uploading music. A post on the Muxtape Tumblr site explained, "No artists or labels have complained. The site is not closed indefinitely. Stay tuned." MTV was unable to reach a Muxtape spokesperson at press time. RIAA spokesperson Jonathan Lamy declined to comment. ...

A report on CNET.com suggested that perhaps the RIAA noticed the increasing popularity of the site and predicted it would tip into the same realm as some of the streaming radio services that have recently been ordered to pay hefty licensing fees in order to continue operating. ...

Speaking of those fees, one of the most popular online music discovery sites, Pandora.com, is on the verge of going under because of the high cost of licensing fees for Internet radio stations. The fees, which do not apply to terrestrial radio, have caused a number of popular online radio stations to shut down or consider going out of business.
I'm not hip enough to be familiar with Muxtape, but I listen to Pandora frequently. It's a shame that these services are being extorted out of business. Can WPKN's audio stream be far behind?

Is This Obama’s “Dukakis In The Tank” Photo?

Keep the Change

Russian aggression is the worst it has been in 40 years, Georgian civilians are dying in the streets, Poland is threatened with nuclear annihilation, and Ukraine looks to be in the crosshairs. McCain is hammering the Russians every day while Condoleeza Rice goes to Georgia to demand Russia’s immediate withdrawal. And here is Obama, in a picture worth a thousand (wrong) words.
